Isfahan from the View of Documentarists

After watching several documentary films on Isfahan art and architecture, a group of experts began to evaluate them and other works made about the city.

As the Public Relations of Aseman Cultural-Artistic Complex reports, the secretary of cinema and deputy of Artistic Affairs and International Relations at the Academy of Arts, Muhammad-Mahdi Haidarian announced the foundation of a documentary film center at the academy. The upcoming event was announced during a session held at Aseman Cultural-Artistic Complex affiliated to the Academy of Arts on Wednesday, December 19. Also Haidarian remarked on the presence of some veteran Iranian documentarists including Muhammad-Reza Aslani and Manouchehr Tayab at the Academy of Arts and their forthcoming co-operations. He indicated to preservation of Iranian printed and recorded heritage as an objective of the center: "In two months we will consider the ways to provide a ground for preservation of documentary films and then will submit several proposals to the Council of Cultural Revolution," he said.

Following the session, Manouchehr Tayab criticized the present condition of documentary filmmaking in the country and the lack of support for Iranian documentarists: "Our younger generation of documentary filmmakers is being wasted and while the Association of Documentary Filmmakers has Establish, the potential customers don't refer to the association for ordering their works.

Another Iranian prominent documentarist, Kamran Shirdel expressed his sadness on the demise of Qafari, an Iranian veteran documentarist, "We should not suppose that our deceased artists are simply architects or painters, there are many other artists in various fields whom we are losing and having been forgotten," he said.

At the other part of the session, Hamid Sohaili Mozafar, documentarist indicated to his works in present times and evaluated the mainstream Iranian documentaries: "A kind of ennui is depicted in the mainstream documentaries, but regarding the past history, we can get fascinating issues about our culture," he noted.

The secretary of Handicrafts Department at the Academy of Arts, Abdol-Majid Sharifzadeh also pointed to the problem of depicting handicrafts in documentary films: "Unfortunately nowadays many who order documentaries to filmmakers lack an artistic profound view and commitment toward documentary filmmaking," he stated. The chairman of the session, Muhammad-Reza Aslani attributed the problem to some film offices which don't know this art and those who refer to clumsy individuals for making documentaries.

Next, an architect and documentarist, Muhammad-Ali Najafi analyzed Isfahan in the view of architecture and regarded the employed forms and ornaments in historical monuments of the city as an inculcation of eternity concept.

The films which were screened at the session included: Praying, Haj Mosavar-ol Molki and Hussein Yavari made by Khosro Sina'ei; The Silver Canvass by Kamran Shirdel; Qalamkar by Hussein A'ala and Designs and Walls by Hamid Sohaili.
